eLearnSecurity Junior Penetration Tester (eJPT) Review

DISCLAIMER

I will NOT be giving away any exam spoilers or answers here. Feel free to contact me with questions, however, I am not willing to discuss any exam specifics or give any overt hints.

THE COURSE

The accompanying course to the eLearnSecurity Junior Penetration Tester (eJPT) exam is the Penetration Testing Student (PTS) course. This is avaiable from INE for free with their starter pass including access to the labs. The exam voucher, however, will run you $200, which is more than fair for what you get. This course will give you everything you need to pass this exam. In fact, it even goes beyond what is needed for the exam. Do not get intimidated by the black box penetration test labs in the course, as these are much more difficult than the exam itself. To be honest, I get antsy when I have purchased an exam voucher and after skimming through the course, I hopped right in and took the exam.

EXAM PROCESS

There is no need to schedule this exam. You can log into the members area and start the exam at a time that is best for you. The exam is not remotely proctored and therefore does not require you to pre-schedule an exact start time. Once you begin, you are given 3 days in the exam environment to complete and submit your exam. There are 20 multiple choice questions and you must get at least 15 correct to pass.

THE EXAM

I passed the eLearnSecurity Junior Penetration Tester (eJPT) exam in about 6 hours. Though it is a multiple choice exam, it is paired with an actual practical hands-on penetration testing element. In order to answer the questions, you have to hack your way around the simulated environment.

I won’t go into any details as doing so would likely reveal exam specifics. If you follow the pentesting process and how to use the tools covered in the course and labs, you will be more than alright. It took me a bit longer than expected because, like a fool, I didn’t initially see the included pcap file prior to diving into the exam. Make sure that you know at least the basics of Wireshark and how to interpret pcap files. Don’t stress too much though, as eLearnSecurity gives you 3 days, which is ample time to complete this exam.

EXAM TIPS

Be sure to read everything multiple times.

Don’t stress as you have plenty of time to complete this exam.

Be sure you understand the routing portion of the course and fully understand the “find the secret server” lab. This is a crucial part for moving about in the exam scenario.

Make sure you have a good grasp of the tools reviewed in the course: nmap, sqlmap, dirbuster, etc.

This is a beginner exam, so as long as you fully grasp the concepts and methodology taught in the course, you will do absolutely fine.

Best of luck. Onwards and upwards!
